This Magic Wilderness, Parts I & II

At Random in the Wilderness

Find out even more, either before or after your visit to Obediah's Okefenok, by reading Robert Latimer Hurst's collection of stories, fact and fiction, of life in Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida. No not a dull text of dates and facts but lively episodes in the lives of such people as Obediah Barber, titled "King of the Okefenokee Swamp" because of pioneer spirit as a settler of this untamed land and of his heroic battle with a bear.

Reading THIS MAGIC WILDERNESS, PARTS I & II (a coffee table collection) and AT RANDOM IN THE WILDERNESS (stories of the Okefenokee and elsewhere) introduce the reader to renown Queen of the Okefenokee Lydia Stone, who entered adulthood a pauper but who ended it as a millionaires. The story of "how" makes fascinating reading. What about a now-vanished community in Southeast Georgia that followed the socialistic philosophy of Englishman John Ruskin, but then something happened that left this community in ashes? Learn about another Ware County, Georgia, community that, as rumors have it, contains a treasure of buried gold, taken from England well over a century ago.

Did you know that right out from Waycross, Georgia, a massacre occurred, one that would end all the slaughters between the Indians and the whites? This writer bets that not many in this area know that tigers are reported to have roamed the marshes here. It's written from reports of people who witnessed and who carried the scars to their graves. Who can not enjoy the exploits and remembrances of a teacher who pioneered teaching in the Okefenokee Swamp? Find out more about that lost Confederate gold. And where do Pogo and Albert really live? Some researchers of Western lore and history don't even know about Wyatt Earp's sidekick, Dr. John Henry Holliday, and the havoc he caused in South Georgia.

Fernandina Beach, Florida, was once the haven for pirates, who took over and ruled this north Florida community; their stories are almost unbelievable. And what about Blackbeard Island, off the coast of Georgia? Is the gold of Blackbeard the Pirate really buried here some place? A plot of land, now owned by the Nature Conservancy of Georgia, belies the fact that it is located in South Georgia near Broxton. What makes it so different? Many years ago, rafting the logs on the Satilla River was a daily routine, but it was not an easy job. What made these "river rats" keep going? Journey through the Okefenokee Swamp on the Red Trail and see the beauty therein. Who knows the recipe for a good batch of taffy candy? Well, when it's cane boilin', sugar bilin' and taffy pullin' time in South Georgia, calories don't count.

President-to-be Woodrow Wilson once came to Waycross, Georgia, and history was made. What took place? Gospel music still is heard in these woodlands. Why is it so popular here? English Actress Fanny Kemble, living between Darien and St. Simons, once took coastal Georgia and the South to task. What do some say happened once her journal was published? Where does Burt Reynolds call home? The peanut brittle, Sophie Mae, has a most fascinating origin right here in South Georgia. A prison in Blackshear, Georgia, held those who were brought from Andersonville. What are the stories here?
